MFMHL KICKS OFF FIRST WEEKEND OF 2012-13 SEASON

The new MFMHL season got underway this weekend and if the first weekend is any indication it is going to be a very competitive year. With 2 ties and a 1-0 game in the first 4 games the stage has been set for a competitive season. The 8 MFMHL teams all attended the first ever Central Plains Capitals  Preseason Showcase in Portage la Prairie along with Swift Current Wildcats from the SFMHL last weekend - Sept. 28-30 in Portage la Prairie at the PCU Centre. This was also an extremely competitive weekend with only 2 games out of 18 being decided by more than 3 goals and 14 of the 18 being decided by 2 goals or less or being ties. There were several NCAA Scouts, CIS and ACAC representation along with the Regional Scout from Hockey Canada. The University of Manitoba's Assistant Coach Lisa Peters, a 4 year NCAA D1 Player, provided players and parents with an information session on CIS opportunities, differences between CIS and NCAA and what to look for and ask about when choosing a post secondary school to attend especially as a student-athlete. Laura Solberg from Hockey Canada made small presentations to each team in their dressing rooms about the Hockey Canada Programs.

It was a great first Showcase and looks like it will grow in the future.

The MFMHL season will see teams chasing the 2012 Esso Cup National Champion Pembina Valley Hawks who have won 4 straight MFMHL titles. If the Preseason is any indication the Hawks will have their toughest challenge ever in winning another provincial title as teams like the Winnipeg Avros (last year's MFMHL finalists), Westman Wildcats (2009 Esso Cup National Champions) and Central Plains Capitals are off to strong starts to the 2012-13 season. Much improved teams such as the Yellowhead Chiefs along with the Norman Wild and Winnipeg Ice will all be in the mix as the MFMHL looks to have the most parity it has ever seengoing into its 5th year of existance.

COME CATCH ALL THE ACTION!

Good Luck to all MFMHL teams with their upcoming season!
