MFMHL PLAYOFF UPDATES

The MFMHL First Round matchups are now complete as the teams continue the trek towards the Provincial "AAA" Championship and the right to represent Hockey Manitoba in the Hockey Canada West Regional vs. the Saskatchewan "AAA" Midget League winner. The Regional Champion will move on to compete at the 2014 Hockey Canada Esso Cup National Female Midget Championship slated for Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek, Ont., from April 20-26. The MFMHL will now take a break until March 10 as they allow their players to participate in the 2014 Power Smart Manitoba Games in Morden-Winkler from March 6-9, 2014.

Series E - #1 Pembina Valley Hawks vs. #5 Yellowhead Chiefs

Series F - #2 Winnipeg Avros vs. #3 Westman Wildcats

The first round matchups Summaries:

ROUND 1

Series A - #1 Pembina Valley Hawks vs. #8 Eastman Selects - The defending champion Pembina Valley Hawks have moved to the Second Round with a 3 game sweep of the Selects by scores of 8-1, 9-0 and 3-0. Veteran and Team Captain Lauryn Keen racked of 11 points to lead the Hawks.

Series B - #2 Winnipeg Avros vs. #7 Winnipeg Ice - The second place Winnipeg Avros have put their cross town rivals the Winnipeg Ice out of the plays with a 3 games sweep. The Ice battled hard and were in every game going into the 3rd period and forced OT in the third game. Games Scores were 4-2, 5-2 and 4-3 (OT) with Avros Alternate Captain Alanna Sharman leading the Avros with 6 points.

Series C - #3 Westman Wildcats vs. #6 Norman Wild - The third seeded Westman Wildcats also took out the Norman Wild in 3 games by scores of 4-0, 3-0 and 3-1. Sky Brown picked up all 3 wins in net for the Wildcats limiting the second highest scoring team in the MFMHL to 1 goal and picking up two shutouts.

Series D - #4 Central Plains Capitals vs. #5 Yellowhead Chiefs - Chiefs move on after winning tough Game 5 2-1 and taking the series 3 games to 2. Every game in this series except the first was decided by 1 goal with two games going to OT. The tight checking hard working Chiefs earned their trip to the next round behind the solid goaltending of Kristen Hunt who stopped 35 of 36 shots in Game 5. Courtlyn Oswald the Capitals Captain led all scorers in the series with 6 goals and 2 assists for 8 points.
