The Pembina Valley Hawks finished in second place 9 points behind the Westman Wildcats during the regular season losing the season series 3-1 but that did not stop the Hawks from taking the Wildcats out in 3 straight in their best of 5 MFMHL Championship Final Series. The Hawks ran through the 3 rounds of the MFMHL playoffs undefeated winning 9 straight that included a couple of double OT wins. Behind the incredible goaltending of Halle Oswald the Hawks claimed the MFMHL and Hockey Manitoba "AAA" Midget Provincial Championship when Hannah Petrie scored in the second OT period. In 9 games played Oswald only allowed 7 goals while stopping 265 of 272 shots fired her way registering an incredible save % of .980 and a miniscule GAA of 0.68. The Hawks were outshot in 6 of 9 playoff games but Oswald was a wall in net for the Hawks. The Hawks received solid leadership from their veterans and steady play from all 3 lines throughout the playoffs finding ways to produce timely scoring to secure their first title since the 2014 season having won every MFMHL title to that point in the league's history before Central Plains and Yellowhead won the past 2 titles.
Returning to the top is only fitting for the Hawks as they prepare to host Hockey Canada's Esso Cup Midget National Championship from April 23 to 29, 2017 in Morden. The third and deciding game was not an easy game going into double OT and throughout their playoff run the Hawks were challenged with tight games and found ways to rise to the occasion, getting those timely goals, solid defense and outstanding goaltending to produce the wins necessary to win a championship.
CONGRATS TO THE HAWKS FROM THE ENTIRE MFMHL and GOOD LUCK at THE ESSO CUP!!!
