About the MFHLU18AAA

The Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 "AAA"  (MFHLU18AAA - name change occurred at begiining of 2019-20 season), originally the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League (MFMHL), was founded in 2008 after an Ad-hoc committee was struck by Hockey Manitoba to develop a Constitution for Regional Female Midget Hockey that would provide an elite level for female players within Hockey Manitoba's Regions to aspire to.

The Committee worked for several months to develope the constitution and after a final meeting in Portage la Prairie where all Regions were invited to review and endorse the new constitution it was ratified by Hockey Manitoba in the Spring of 2008. The first season (2008-09) saw 5 teams compete within the league and 2 teams Eastman and Central Plains played an interlocking schedule with the Female Midget AA teams from Hockey Winnipeg.

The 2009-10 season again saw a 5 team league as Norman joined the circuit however Eastman dropped out of the league. Hockey Winnipeg did not wish to establish an interlocking schedule in 2009-10 with the MFHL however a Showcase event was developed by Hockey Winnipeg where MFHL and Hockey Winnipeg Midget AA Female teams played each other over Christmas break in Selkirk.

In the 2010-11 season the MFHL grew to a 7 team circuit with the return of the Eastman Selects and the addition of Westman Wildcats to the league for the first time.

In 2011-12 Hockey Winnipeg joined the MFHL with the ability to form between 2-5 times and the Winnipeg Avros and Winnipeg Ice joined the league creating a very competitive 8 team circuit. Until 2011-12 the MFHL and Hockey Winnipeg teams would play in a provincial tournament format after their regular seasons to decide a provincial champion and representative to the Esso Cup West Regional vs Saskatchewan. The 2011-12 season saw the MFHL Playoff winner now also be declared the Hockey Manitoba U18 "AAA"  (originally Midget) Champion and representatve to the Esso Cup West Regional Championship.

The MFHL has continued to operate with a minimum of 8 teams and has displayed that it is a very competitive league for elite Midget Females to play hockey, since its creation has seen numerous graduating players move onto Canada USport, NCAA D1 and D2-3, ACAC, ACHA University Programs as well as Community College and Manitoba Women's Junior Hockey League (see ALUMNI RECOGNITION PAGE ). As well numerous players have played for Hockey Manitoba's U18 Program of Excellence playing at Hockey Canada's U18 National Championship or the Canada Winter Games. Numerous MFHL players have also gone on to Hockey Canada National Team Camps at the U18, Developmental and Senior Levels with several wearing the National Team Jersey representing Canada during Exhibition Series, Tournaments and World Championships.

The MFHL members are also proud of their efforts to ensure their athletes strive for academic excellence and have had numerous players earn Hockey Manitoba Scholarships. (See ALUMNI RECOGNITION PAGE )

It is the MFHL's continuing goal to promote elite female U18 "AAA" hockey within Hockey Manitoba's designated Regions. To provide the players within the MFHL an opportunity to improve their skills by participating in a competitive league where they receive strong coaching while being supported in both their athletic and academic endeavors that will allow them to move onto higher opportunities within female hockey. As well to have these young athletes be a part of programs and a league that promote community involvement that allows them develop into well rounded successful people by promoting strong work ethics, positive attitudes and respect. By providing these opportunities to these special young athletes while participating in a team sport in a FUN and SAFE environment.
